Mayorkas' Salary Reduction: Bipartisan Bill Proposes $1 Annual Wage

Substantial Decrease from Current $203,500

Proposal Garners Support from Democrats and Republicans

The bipartisan Homeland Security appropriations bill currently under consideration in the House of Representatives contains a provision that would significantly reduce the annual salary of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. If passed, the bill would set Mayorkas' salary at just $1, down from his current $203,500.

The reduction, proposed by the bill's sponsors, would theoretically decrease Mayorkas' salary by over $50,000 if he missed a deadline twelve months in a row. This penalty is intended to hold the DHS Secretary accountable for potential delays in border data reporting.

The legislation has gained support from both Democrats and Republicans. Two Democrat representatives, Jared Golden of Maine and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, have already cast votes in favor of the bill.

Secretary Mayorkas, who has been accused of intentionally delaying border data to conceal the severity of the border crisis, could see a salary reduction of over $4,000 per month if the bill passes. This would result in a total reduction of over $50,000 from his current annual salary.

According to the office of Congressman Bice, the bill currently has 22 Republican cosponsors. The outcome of the vote remains uncertain, but the bipartisan support suggests that the legislation has a strong chance of passing.

Born on November 24, 1959, Alejandro Nicholas Mayorkas is an American lawyer and politician who has served as the seventh United States Secretary of Homeland Security since 2021.
